There are certain times of the year where you probably need to pay more attention in cleaning (like, before guest arrive for dinner and Christmas time) but in an ideal world, your house will be clean at all times of the year. But with kids running around and busy working lifestyles, it is definitely hard to keep up with the cleaning sometimes. But thankfully, cleaning doesn’t have to cause too much effort if you keep on top of it and here are some great ways to start getting into that habit.
Get your favorite ‘get in the cleaning mood’ playlist on and let’s start cleaning!
Organizing: It is not just about having a clean home, but about having an organized one, too! Sort through your junk drawers and clear out your wardrobe. Not only will it give you more space, it will also make your home feel cleaner too.
Wipes: Some places in your home wont be that bad, especially if they are places that you clean often, just bust out a packet of wipes and give everywhere a quick wipe over. It will take half an hour and the surfaces will be sparkling.
Hoover: Don’t just run the hoover over the rug in the living room, really go to town with it - behind the beds, pull the couch cushions off and get behind the fridge with the hoover. Places that you usually forget about!
Toiletries: If you like trying new products all the time, it is time to throw away those bottles of half finished shower gel or hair products laying around the side of the tub. Don’t forger to check the expiry dates of your make up and beauty products. Check out our blog for some great tips. There’s no use in keeping them just cluttering up your bathroom.
The room of doom: Not everyone has one of these, but the spare bedroom in your house often becomes a dumping ground for odds and ends that you don’t have anywhere to put. Why not spend an afternoon to sort out what you really need to keep and what to toss. If there is anything of value you can always sell it on or donate to your local charity.
Fridge and freezer: Is your fridge starting to smell a bit? And your freezer covered in ice? Empty it all out and defrost your freezer. Most fridges have removable shelves and draws so take them out and give them a good wash with soap and water before placing them back in. As you are putting your food back into the fridge and freezer, check the expiry dates and make sure everything you are putting back in the fridge will be eaten.
CD’s and DVD’s: These days everything is saved on our computers, and our old DVD’s and CD’s get forgotten about. If you haven’t watched it in the last year, it’s probably time to get rid of them. Go through your collection and either donate or sell on to de-clutter. If you are a collector, then it’s time to get the good ol’ duster out and give it a quick clean.
Toys: Kids become very possessive of their toys when it is time to clear them out - that annoying car toy that they haven’t played with in a year, suddenly it is their favorite toy and they can’t live without. When they are out, have a quick rummage through and find the toys that you know they haven’t played with and won’t miss. That way there is space for any new toys that come in. Do the same with your pet’s toys.
Papers: Get the shredder out and go to town on all of those old pieces of paper or statements that are laying around your house. You are probably not going to need your bank statement from three years ago…or that receipt from your meal with your brother 3 weeks ago. Only keep documents that are essential to have, and make sure you organize them in folders.
