It may not be Italian style with their delicious and authentic stone baked pizzas, but homemade pizzas in the comfort of your own home are just as good. Don’t be tempted to go out to the store to get a ready-made pizza, making your own pizza allows you to mix the flavors and you get to customize how it looks. You will also get to make it as healthy or unhealthy as you want since there are healthier ways to make pizza bases now.
To celebrate Pizza Party Day this year, make a day of it and gather your friends or family to get creative and make your own pizzas and see who makes the best flavor / best looking pizza.
What you’ll need:
- 5 cups of bread flour
- 2 1/4 Yeast
- 3 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups of water
- 1/4 vegetable oil
- Mozzarella (Or other cheese if your prefer)
Wash your hands …
To start you’ll need a medium bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, and salt and mix well. Next, combine water and oil and heat to 120° to 130°F before adding to the flour mixture. Blend your mixture at low speed until moistened, beat for 3 minutes at medium speed. By hand, gradually stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
Now that you have your dough you need to knead it on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. Once your dough is needed shape it into a ball, cover it in saran wrap and leave it for 15-20 minutes.
Once you’ve allowed your dough to rest divide it into 2 equal balls. Make sure you fingers are floured and press each ball into a greased 12 inch pizza pan.
Sprinkle 1/4 cup of your cheese over dough to prevent a soggy crust. Then spread passata sauce on each pizza (approximately 3/4 cup of sauce per pizza). Cover with cheese of your choice then add your toppings. Bake at 400°F for 25 to 30 minutes until edge is crisp and light golden brown and cheeses are melted.
While pizza is in the oven you’ll have time to clean….
Cauliflower Crust Base
For the healthy pizza lovers, you can make the crust out of cauliflower instead. All you need is:
- 1 cauliflower
- 100g ground almonds
- 2 eggs (beaten)
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
Heat oven to 390°F.
Remove the leaves from the cauliflower and trim the stalk end, then cut into chunks. Blitz half the cauliflower in a food processor until finely chopped, like rice. Transfer to a bowl and repeat with the remaining half.
Tip all the cauliflower in a bowl, cover with cling film and microwave on High for 5-6 minutes until softened. Tip onto a clean tea towel and leave to cool a little.
Once cool enough to handle, scrunch up the tea towel and squeeze as much liquid as you can out of the cauliflower, then transfer to a clean bowl. Stir in the ground almonds, egg, oregano and plenty of seasoning.
Line a baking tray with baking parchment and grease with oil. Mound the cauliflower mix into the center of the tray, then use a spoon and your hands to spread out into a 30cm round. Make it a little thicker at the edges to create a ‘crust’.
Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and starting to crisp a little at the edges.
Pizza isn’t always the healthiest food but it is definitely irresistible for most people, so a healthy option is always great for health-conscious people. Make sure you thoroughly clean kitchen counters before and after with antibacterial surface wipes, so you avoid any contamination with your pizzas.
