In the New Year we all get the fitness bug, wanting to be out exercising and getting fit.

Hiking is an activity that many people love to do for the fun of being outdoors, for getting fit and for a new experience. Depending on where you live there are different places to hike: forests, countryside, beaches. This winter grab the hiking boots that have been in the back of your wardrobe since last year and get out!.

Before you go hiking you need to make sure you have everything prepared, pack your kit the day before your hike and plan your route! This is vital when you are hiking so you don’t get lost. It’s nice to get out in the fresh air, but it also means you can be out in the middle of nowhere with not many other people around. So, be prepared!

Take with you:

Water: Make sure you have enough for the whole hike.

Plasters/First Aid Kit: You never know when a blister is going to appear, or someone is going to hurt his or her self.

Wipes: They come in handy for a lot of things, make sure to take antiseptic wipes for cuts/scrapes and hand cleaning wipes. Also refreshing wipes and intimate hygiene wipes may become handy because you never know when nature will call!

Food: Make sure the food you take is full of energy, protein bars, bananas, nuts/seeds, and berries.

Waterproof coat: It’s winter so likelihood is you will be taking a coat/jacket with you. But if you live in a warmer destination it’s still good to take a lightweight waterproof jacket. Just in case.

Whistles: This is especially important if you have kids with you. Everyone in the group, even the kids should have whistles. This will be very useful if someone gets lost so you can find his or her location. It’s also a good idea to wear bright colors.

After you are done packing your bag you will be ready to go hiking. Dress in bright colors, and make sure you are dressed sensibly and have comfortable walking shoes on. Make sure you also put sunscreen lotion on (even in winter). Whilst you’re hiking there are a few tips to also follow:

Plan your route before you go. You should also tell someone where you’re going in case you get lost or injured, then there is someone back home who can help to find you.

Don’t use the same route each time you go though! It’s good to find new places to explore.

Stay on marked trails. As you hike, pay attention to landmarks and trail blazes, usually they’re painted marks on trees.

Don’t count on cell phones to work in the wilderness. The whole point of hiking is enjoying the outdoors and the beauty of it all – you can leave the gadgets behind!

Avoid hiking alone because the “buddy system” is safer during any type of activity. If traveling with a group, never stray from the group.

Take your time and pay attention to where you are going, and enjoy you trip. Hiking out in nature is beautiful and it’s nice to go slow, take a step back and enjoy the beauty.

There are so many lovely places to go, how could you ever choose? Let us know where your favorite place to hike is and share your hiking stories with us in the comments below.

We live on the edge of Dartmoor so are very lucky in that respect - however during the week I tend to haunt the lanes around our home.
